With London in recent time being a very chic place to come and visit it makes understandable sense that they have fashionable hotels to go together. Boutique hotels are becoming more and more popular & give a different type of hotel accommodation than you would find from your more traditional accommodation would provide. If you’re looking for some of the greatest then visit areas like Knightsbridge, Notting Hill & Soho and you are expected to find just what you’re hoping for. Between a cruise and an all inclusive vacation package, which one would you go for? First of all, both are quite different but we have done both. But the thing is, it’s hard to compare these two holiday options sometimes…

Think of a cruise and an all-inclusive resort hotel that moves from place to place. The costs may be more cost effective now that the Caribbean seems to have more cruise capacity than they really need.

There is a place for both, we felt. On one hand, a cruise offers a blend of different ports of call, days at sea and entertainment, while the resort offers non-stop relaxation.

It’s really pointless to compare a cruise to a land-based vacation sometimes because there are just so many variables involved. Both choices will have a range of amenities depending on the price range you are in. A Dolphin Cruise won’t compare to a vacation at a Grand Lido in Jamaica; nor would a Seabourne cruise be comparable to a Club Med vacation. The similarities are that a cruise is also an all inclusive vacation…on the average a cruise with air will cost a little more for an all inclusive land vacation. But I think you would find the entertainment better, the food better than a Club Med vacation, the service a little better, and remember that you have a choice of seeing different ports as opposed to the all inclusive resort where they like to advertise that you never have to leave their property. A cruise is far more structured - meals at specific times, formal nights, shows, etc, whereas, an all inclusive is very unstructured, and far more casual - meals at almost any time with no real dress code.

Days in cruise ships are pretty similar (after all you are always in a ship!), in that we had a choice of staying on ship/hotel by the pool/beach, or sightseeing.

Evenings we tended to stay in the private pool by our villa with friends (the way the AI was set up, the
pool was very private). Even the hot-tub, which served a few villas, was almost always empty. The two main pools and beach were always busy. I don’t think it was as easy to get the privacy on a cruise. Not that either is better or worse - we enjoyed both - it’s just different. It depends on what you’re looking for in a particular vacation.

We’ve always enjoyed meeting folks on the cruises. One thing to remember is that different vacations has different criteria. For some reason, the cruises seemed “busier”. We spent most of the days sightseeing, and by the time we got back, changed, had dinner, got
changed out of the silly stuff into real clothes, checked out the midnight buffet (we had late seating - we couldn’t eat much more), the day was over. At the AI, we sometimes did some sightseeing, but even at
the hotel we were swimming, sailing, snorkeling, etc. Somehow, it just didn’t feel as busy. Perhaps because we didn’t do as much sightseeing.

Our personal choice? Both. We’ve done both, and we just can’t wait to enjoy either a cruise or a land all-inclusive package, so long as we get to go for a holiday!

Christmas has only just finished and it’s still months until Easter, but I bet you’ve already started to plan your summer holiday. So where are you thinking of going? Majorca? Corfu? Ayia Napa?

You know what it’s going to be like. You’ll have a flight at some ungodly hour of the morning from some airport that’s nowhere near where you live. There’ll be screaming kids and vomiting babies everywhere, your flight will be delayed and then when you finally get to wherever you’re going, your luggage will be waiting for you thousands of miles away in some hellhole on the other side of the world. And then you’ll discover that the Paradise View hotel you’ve booked into doesn’t view paradise at all, but rather a stinking building site with equally stinking fat workmen leering at you.

Why put yourself through it all?

Why not take the stress-free option this summer and have a beautifully relaxing holiday to remember? No delayed flights, no tantruming toddlers and definitely no sweaty foreign workmen. Instead, put your suitcases in the boot, give your motor insurance company a tinkle, squeeze your girlfriends into the car (or if really necessary, your bloke), drive right past that airport and keep driving.

Because you’re not flying anywhere. Nope. Instead, you’re taking the relaxing route to holiday paradise- you’re driving there.

Nowadays there’s no need to spend hundreds of pounds flying away to some luxurious destination. You can drive there yourself and save a bundle in the process. Majorca, Corfu and Ayia Napa might be out of the question, but there so many fantastic places you can get to.

If you’re dead set on a holiday in Spain, then a slightly longer trip from Portsmouth or Plymouth can get you to Santander and Bilbao. On Spain’s northern coast, they’ve also got a horde of beautiful beaches nearby, and France’s southern sands aren’t too far away either. A word of warning though, Spanish drivers are notoriously bad and the chances of getting involved in a smash are fairly high, so unless you want that women’s car insurance premium to rocket up, be sure to take lots of care.

Scandinavian drivers are nowhere near as bad as their Spanish cousins, and a ferry from England or Scotland’s east coast can take you to the mind-numbing beauty of the fjords and mountains in the lands of our Viking forefathers.

If that’s not your sort of thing then head over to Stockholm, Copenhagen or Oslo for a party to remember. If there’s one thing the Scandinavians know how to do, it’s have a good time. Just remember to pack your paracetamol.

If you think you can take more, get back on the ferry in Stockholm and take an overnight trip up to Finland. The trip is world-famous as a non-stop party, and if you like your Absolut, Carlsberg and Kopparbergs, it’s definitely the thing for you.

Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Germany and virtually any other country on mainland Europe is accessible via a ferry or the Channel Tunnel, and you’ll be surprised at how much more fun, and cheaper, it can be than the packed beach resorts of the Costa Blanca. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that the dental assistant profession is expected to grow about 42 percent by 2012. This is good news for the thousands of dentists who rely on certified dental assistants or dental hygienists to help with patient care.

Dental assistants, who train in various dental assisting programs across the nation, are usually the first and last people patients see at the dentist’s office. They assist with routine cleanings and dental x-rays, prepare equipment, and perform other tasks requested by the dentist.

“We have come a long way from just scheduling appointments and putting on a patient bib,” said Mary Frohn, CDA, CDPMA, EFDA, B.S., a professor in the Massasoit Community College Dental Assistant Program. After eleven years working in a clinical setting, Frohn now trains the next generation of dental auxiliary students to enter the field.

“I get great satisfaction from taking students from not knowing anything about dental assisting on their first day of class, to help make them dental career professionals in less than a year,” Frohn said.

Growing trends - including promoting good dental hygiene, increases in cosmetic dentistry, a rising number of employers offering dental insurance and more government-subsidized dental hygiene programs - are all responsible for increasing the demand for dental services and filling seats in her dental assistant program.

Unlike with some jobs that are amiable to on-the-job training, dental assistants should be trained and credentialed to work in the dental assisting profession.

“It’s impossible to learn everything you need to know while you work on the job from eight to five,” said Frohn. “From a consumer aspect, training is necessary because we want to know the auxiliary using radiation on us to take our x-rays, or place a dental sealant, is properly credentialed.”

There are more benefits to being certified than just gaining consumer trust. According to a 2004 survey published by the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB), certified dental assistants stay in the profession for 14.4 years on average and earn more than dental assistants who lack certification.

“A dental assistant with credentials has negotiating power. The more credentials an assistant has, the greater the power in negotiating a fair and equitable salary,” said Betty Finkbeiner in the DANB survey results. Finkbeiner, CDA, RDA, M.S., is chairperson of the Dental Assisting Program at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Certified dental assistants - whether certified by their state board of dental registration, the Dental Assistant National Board, or some other registered dental assistant certifying body - are enjoying the increased demand for their services in a variety of emerging specialized areas. Among them is aesthetic dentistry, which includes bleaching and digital imaging services.

As technology changes the face of dentistry, dental assisting training will become a necessity. Dental assisting schools and dental hygienist programs will continue to provide training to meet the demand for those who want to become a dental assistant.
